Breakout B4: The Farmer’s Renaissance: How Modern Agriculture is Cultivating Mental Health and Community Connection [Brett Chisolm]

August 25 @ 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm

Today’s farmers are more than growers—they’re storytellers, healers, and connectors, re-imagining agriculture as a tool for joy, unity, and change. As an LGBTQ farmer in a traditionally conservative region, Brett experienced firsthand how focusing on shared joys—like flowers and the land—can bridge divides, create community, and inspire healing.

Brett will share how farming helped him embrace imperfection, find purpose, and build resilience. The principles of working with the land—mindfulness, creativity, and connection—are tools anyone can use to cultivate well-being. Brett has seen how focusing on shared joys can transcend societal divides, creating inclusive spaces of understanding and celebration.

Farming provides the unique opportunity to share something tangible—something grown, nurtured, and meaningful—with others. Brett will demonstrate a simple propagation technique while ecouraging attendees to consider to whom they could give such a gift and how this act of giving connects people not only to others but to the land itself.

Brett will also discuss practical steps for integrating sustainable practices into gardening, from planting natives to re-generative techniques that support pollinators and ecosystems.

Brett invites attendees to reflect on how they can use their gardens or farms as a space for connection, healing, and giving.

Brett is the founder of Three Dudes Farm, the largest flower farm in the Houston area, located in Montgomery County, Texas. The farm has quickly grown to serve over 300 members through an innovative subscription program that delivers fresh, seasonal blooms directly to their doors. By integrating native Texas flowers and sustainable farming techniques, Brett has created a farm that produces beauty AND supports pollinators.

Three Dudes Farm is also a place of compassion and community. Brett incorporates his love of animals into the farm’s mission, rescuing and rehoming animals in need, while leading fundraising efforts to support their care. This commitment to kindness extends to his work with subscribers, where Brett focuses on using flowers and farming to spark joy and connection.

With a background in publishing and commercial photography, Brett has brought storytelling to the heart of the farm. Through heartfelt emails and personal reflections, Brett shares not just the story of the farm but lessons about grace, imperfection, and the healing power of nature. Mental health is a cornerstone of Brett’s vision, as he uses the farm to celebrate the profound connection between flower care and self-care, showing how small moments of beauty can inspire hope and change perspectives.
